Why We Gather in Circle for Shakti Yoga Flow

Five people in dresses hold hands and raise them in celebration while walking in a grassy field under a cloudy sky.

The Sacred Geometry of Circle

Women have long gathered in circles to share their stories, thoughts, ideas and experiences.

Circles offer a gentle space for women to come together and share.

Circle allows that everyone within is equal – there is no hierarchy.

Everyone and every expression is valued and honoured equally.

Circles are based on compassion and the knowing that each woman is whole. We learn so much from one another. We witness each other and allow ourselves to be seen and heard, honored, loved and enjoyed.

I believe circles are SO valuable and important as they give us time and space to honour ourselves individually and also collectively.

In Circle we understand we are not trying to fix anyone. There is no judgement or criticism.

We choose to believe deep down, with whatever is happening for each woman, they know their own answer and what they have to do to walk their path. We simply listen whole heartedly to what another woman has to say, and we receive being heard in our wholeness.

Circle is for all women of all ages and all walks of life who are looking to nourish their soul though connection, celebration and community.

“Somewhere, there are people to whom we can speak with passion without having the words catch in our throats. Somewhere a circle of hands will open to receive us, eyes will light up as we enter, voices will celebrate with us whenever we come into our own power. Community means strength that joins our own strength to do our work that needs to be done. Arms to hold us when we falter. A circle of healing. A circle of friends. A place where we can be free. ~ Starhawk (author/ activist)

The Ancient Wisdom of Circle

Have you ever noticed how a circle has no beginning and no end?

No hierarchy.

No top or bottom.

No front or back.

The circle is perhaps our oldest sacred symbol, appearing in every culture across time and space.

From stone circles and medicine wheels to the moon’s phases and the cycles of a woman’s body.

The circle speaks to something primal within us.

Something we remember in our bones.

When we gather in circle for Shakti Yoga Flow, we’re tapping into this ancient wisdom. We’re remembering a way of being together that predates our modern, linear structures.

The Power of Circle Energy

Energy moves differently in a circle.

When we arrange ourselves in rows facing one direction (like in most conventional yoga classes), energy flows predominantly in one direction – toward the teacher at the front.

But in circle, energy circulates.

It flows between us, creating a field that supports each woman and the collective simultaneously.

This circulating energy creates a container strong enough to hold:

🌹 Our vulnerability and our power

🌹 Our sorrow and our joy

🌹 Our confusion and our clarity

🌹 Our wounding and our healing

When one woman shares her truth in circle, it creates ripples that touch every other woman present. Not through words alone, but through the energetic field we create together.

Sisterhood in the Round

There’s something profoundly nourishing about sitting in circle with other women.

We see each other’s faces.

We witness each other’s bodies.

We hear each other’s voices.

In a world where women have been taught to compete, compare, and criticize one another, the circle offers a radical alternative:

Collaboration instead of competition.

Compassion instead of criticism.

Connection instead of comparison.

In Shakti Yoga Flow circles, we practice this alternative way of relating – not just as a nice idea, but as an embodied reality.

As we move, breathe, and express together in circle, we’re rewiring patterns of separation and learning to trust in sisterhood again.

The Womb at the Centre

When women gather in circle, we naturally create a centre point – an empty space that holds potent possibility.

In Shakti Yoga Flow, we recognize this centre as symbolic of the womb – both our individual wombs and the collective womb of creation.

The womb as centre reminds us:

Creation emerges from emptiness.

Power flows from stillness.

Wisdom arises from listening.

As we move around this sacred centre, we honour the creative power within each woman present. We acknowledge that each of us carries the capacity to birth new life – whether that’s physical children, creative projects, or entirely new ways of being in the world.

Circles Within Circles: The Fractal Nature of Feminine Wisdom

In Shakti Yoga Flow, we recognize that circles exist within circles.

The circle of women gathered in practice.

The circle of the womb within each woman.

The circle of the heart sending blood throughout the body.

The circle of breath flowing in and out.

The circle of the day turning to night and back again.

The circle of the moon waxing and waning.

The circle of the seasons turning.

The circle of life, death, and rebirth.

By gathering in circle, we physically embody this fractal wisdom. We remember our place within the greater circles of life.

This remembering is medicine for our souls in a culture that has forgotten the circular nature of existence.

Creating Safe Space Through Circle

The circle creates natural boundaries.

What’s shared in circle, stays in circle.

What’s witnessed in circle, is held in circle.

This boundary isn’t rigid or restrictive. Rather, it creates the safety needed for authentic expression and deep surrender.

In Shakti Yoga Flow circles, these boundaries allow women to:

Explore movements they might feel self-conscious about in other settings

Express sounds and emotions that have been suppressed

Share insights and experiences without fear of judgment

Ask questions without worrying about appearing foolish

Take risks with their creative expression.

The Democracy of Circle

In circle, the teacher or facilitator becomes part of the whole rather than separate from it.

While I may guide the Shakti Yoga Flow practice, I too am held by the circle’s wisdom.

I too am learning, growing, and being transformed by our gathering.

This horizontal sharing of power creates a very different dynamic than the hierarchical structure of most learning environments.

It recognizes that wisdom doesn’t flow from one source but emerges from the collective field we create together.

Each woman brings her unique gifts, insights, and experiences.

Each woman is both student and teacher.

Each woman’s voice matters.

Practical Magic: How Circle Transforms Our Practice

When we practice Shakti Yoga Flow in circle, something magical happens:

We become mirrors for one another.

When I see another woman move with freedom and abandon, it awakens that possibility in me.

When I witness another woman express her grief through sound, it gives me permission to release what I’ve been holding.

When I observe another woman claim her power without apology, it calls forth my own empowerment.

This mirroring isn’t about comparison or imitation. It’s about recognizing our shared humanity and the universal experiences that connect us as women.

It’s about seeing ourselves in each other and remembering parts of ourselves we may have forgotten.
