A Sacred Pause: Meditation in Shakti Yoga Flow
In a Shakti Yoga Flow circle there is always an element of meditation. So what is it?
When a person’s mind is either totally quiet or completely focused, meditation is being practiced.
Meditation is about training in awareness and focused attention.
It is a skill that can be learned. Just like working out muscles, you need to keep practicing to see results.
It is not about being perfect. It is simply about the practice.
There are a diverse range of meditation styles and techniques. It can be practiced by anyone.
Meditation has been recorded in history for thousands of years and is found at the core of religious traditions.
Meditation can also been seen as a universal spiritual wisdom. It leads from us the mind to the heart.
Research has shown that meditation counteracts the effects of stress. It essentially is the opposite of the stress response and can disengage us from the stress response. It also showed that a meditation practice helps people achieve balance both mentally and physically.
Modern science has researched the effects of meditation and shown that the mental changes that occur during the practice of meditation alter brain waves. These altered states cause physical reactions in the body that promote healing and well being.
Meditation as the Portal to Embodiment
Have you ever noticed how much of your day is spent lost in thought?
Moving from one task to the next… planning tomorrow… rehashing yesterday… your mind constantly pulling you away from this moment, away from your body?
Meditation creates a sacred pause.
A moment to actually inhabit your body.
To feel the rise and fall of your breath.
To notice the subtle sensations dancing across your skin.
To become aware of what is actually happening in this miraculous temple of your body you call home.
In Shakti Yoga Flow, meditation isn’t separate from movement – it becomes the foundation from which all movement emerges.
When we meditate, we’re not trying to escape our bodies or transcend our humanness. We’re sinking deeper into the wisdom and intelligence that already lives within our cells.
Why Meditation is Central to Shakti Yoga Flow
The womb space holds incredible wisdom, yet so many of us have lost connection to this sacred centre.
Meditation creates the bridge.
Through focused attention and gentle awareness, we can begin to sense the subtle energies of our womb, heart, and our body’s expression.
We start to perceive the whispers of intuition that have always been there, waiting for us to listen.
In circle, meditation allows us to:
🌹 Drop beneath the surface chatter of the mind
🌹 Awaken our sensory awareness
🌹 Notice what’s present without judgment
🌹 Feel the energy moving through our bodies
🌹 Connect to the wisdom of our womb space
🌹 Remember who we truly are beneath the roles we play
Sometimes when women first come to circle, they share how challenging it is to sit in stillness. Or move from a place of their body’s expression. To be with themselves fully. To actually feel.
I understand this completely.
Our culture has taught us to numb, to disconnect, to push through. To live from the neck up, in a world of concepts and thoughts rather than sensations and feelings.
Yet it is through feeling that we access our aliveness, our pleasure, our vitality. Our birthright as embodied women.
The Science Behind the Sacred
What I find fascinating is how modern research confirms what ancient wisdom traditions have known for millennia.
When we meditate regularly:
Our nervous system moves from fight-or-flight into rest-and-digest
The body releases tension held in tissues and organs
Blood pressure normalises
Stress hormones decrease
The brain creates new neural pathways
Our immune function improves
Our emotional regulation becomes more refined
These aren’t just spiritual claims – they’re physiological realities.
And for women specifically, meditation has been shown to:
🌻 Support hormonal balance
🌻 Ease menstrual discomfort
🌻 Enhance fertility
🌻 Reduce symptoms of perimenopause and menopause
🌻 Deepen sensual awareness and pleasure
The body knows how to heal itself. Meditation simply creates the conditions for that natural healing to occur.
Meditation as a Way of Being
What I love most about weaving meditation into Shakti Yoga Flow is that it isn’t just something we “do” for 10 minutes on a cushion.
It becomes a way of moving through the world.
A way of relating to ourselves and others.
A way of approaching our daily tasks with presence and awareness.
When meditation becomes embodied, you might notice:
Colours appear more vivid
Food tastes more alive
Touch feels more electric
Your intuition speaks more clearly
Your relationships deepen
You catch yourself smiling for no reason at all
This is what it means to truly inhabit your body as a temple of revelation and wisdom.
An Invitation to Presence
If you’ve struggled with meditation before, I invite you to approach it differently.
Not as another thing to achieve or perfect.
But as a gentle return to your own inner knowing.
A sacred pause to remember what you already are.
In Shakti Yoga Flow circles, we create a container of safety and sisterhood where this remembering can happen naturally.
Where your body can unwind into its own rhythm.
Where your breath can find its natural depth.
Where you can rediscover the pleasure of simply being in your body.
If you feel called to explore this sacred practice in community with other women, I’d love to welcome you into an upcoming Shakti Yoga Flow Circle.
Together, we’ll journey through meditation, gentle movement, and authentic expression to awaken the wild wisdom that lives within you.
To feel the aliveness that is your birthright.
To remember the magic of your feminine essence.
For Canberra women, this page contains information about upcoming circles.
